.Psoriasis is one of the most common chronic skin diseases, and it affects men and women in roughly equal numbers. Approximately 70% of those who suffer with the skin condition have early psoriasis, a conditions which normally starts around the age of 16 for women and 21 for men. Late psoriasis, which is rare often, will not start until about the age of 40 reaching a peak in its severity around the age of 58. Psoriasis is not contagious. There are many reasons for this common skin condition, which develops as patches of red scaly skin. A flare up can occur any time and once you develop the condition it comes and goes throughout life. There could be times when Psoriasis clears up for a long spell, but in some cases the flare-ups occur often. Psoriasis is not an infectious or cancerous the most occurring type of this skin disease is psoriasis vulgaris, it accounts for approximately 85% of all cases. The patches of red and swollen skin usually start out small and then develop to palm sized patches (plaques) that frequently affect the head, elbows and knees. It can also cause the buttocks, breasts and back to be affected. The areas always appear flaky, and about half of those who suffer with psoriasis complain of itching. The disease process as well as the appearance can vary greatly from person to person. Although a mild case of the skin condition is difficult to notice, some people suffer with frequent severely affected areas. In the worst cases, more than 80% of your body can be covered with the scaly skin. The finger and sometimes even the toenails can be affected. About half of the people who suffer with this condition – the nails may have a dented appearance and maybe discoloured, or even be completely destroyed by the disease.
